Last year, we purchased coffee from Alirio for the first time. We were intrigued that he was growing pacas in Colombia and were very impressed with the quality. This year, we purchased a pink bourbon from him, and doubled the volume of our commitment from 2025. We're very pleased to see some of the same characteristics coming through as last year's coffee, but with a much more vibrant acidity, which we believe is attributable to the pink bourbon variety. This year's lot reminds us of strawberry, peach, mango, and rosehips.

Alirio and his wife Anayibe are members of the groups Los Guacharos, a group of friends and neighbors near Bruselas, Huila collectively working to transition away from synthetic chemical inputs in their farming, and towards a more active, biodynamic form of agriculture. Alirio is currently working towards a goal of 50% organic agriculture. The members of the Los Guacharos group also work together to commercialize their coffee collectively, and the group has a strong sense of solidarity. Alirio has worked hard to specialize in more adventurous varieties- his farm has pink bourbon, bourbon aji, caturra, sidra, chiroso, pacas, ombligón, red bourbon, colombia amarillo, and caturrón varieties, and he and Anayibe just planted laurina and wush wush- and they’re planning to plant sudan rume. Alirio and Anayibe have intentionally left part of their farm as a protected natural bio-reserve as well.

Lately, Alirio’s sons Fabian and Santiago have been especially involved in processing
the more unique varieties on the farm, including pacas- Alirio and Anayibe have given
them both specific plots of the farm for them to manage. Fabian and Santiago both
want to create really high quality coffees- they want to build their own lab, and
they’ve taken a lot of pride in seeing the family’s coffee around the world. When
asked what the most important thing is in the management of the family farm, they
said that they specifically wanted to focus on implementing organic products that
minimize the negative impact on soils of synthetic chemical fertilizers.
