We're thrilled to be working with Marleny Imbachi's coffee from this most recent harvest. She is an exceptionally knowledgable and talented producer and we've been drinking her coffee for years before ever having the opportunity to buy it to roast ourselves. Marleny and her husband, Augusto Ortega, are both well-renowned producers in San Augustin and founding members of the Monkaaba group. We purchased from both Augusto and Marleny's pink bourbon lots last year and they were easily some of our favorites on the menu. This year, we're happy to share Marleny's Gesha; a variety renowned for its quality potential. It's soft and delicate with floral honey and tea-like aromatics, plus a lively citrus acidity that reminds us of tropical fruits like mango, papaya, and honeydew melon. This is one of her first harvests of Gesha from seeds she planted back in 2020. It takes several years for trees to begin producing cherries at all, and from there it can take a while for producers to optimize their growing practices and processing for new varieties. Even though this is Marleny’s first harvest of substantial size from these trees, the quality is already excellent, but we can’t wait to see how much better it gets in years to come!
The Monkaaba group is an initiative aimed at assisting producers in finding better market access and better prices for their coffees, but also helps invest in producers to ensure their future success. The group is educating producers on how the supply chain works so that they can better navigate it, while helping them to improve growing, harvesting, and processing techniques. The also host open weekly cuppings to improve producer's ability to evaluate and understand their coffees while they receive feedback from other members.
