Robert Montanchez began growing coffee at the age of 16 when he planed his first 2000 Caturra trees in 2013. After the passing of his father, Robert began to manage his family's farm. Around this time, leaders of the Monkaaba producer group, Augusto Ortega and Esnaider Ortega Gomez, encouraged Robert to join them. Monkaaba is an initiative aimed at assisting producers in finding better market access and better prices for their coffees, but also helps invest in producers to ensure their future success.  They are educating producers on how the supply chain works so that they can better navigate it, while helping them to improve growing, harvesting, and processing techniques. The also host open weekly cuppings to improve producer's ability to evaluate and understand their coffees while they receive feedback from other members.

Although Robert lives on the far side of San Augustin, he is a mainstay at the weekly cuppings. His determination and passions shows in his coffee and we're happy to be roasting and serving his Pink Bourbon as a prime example of his hard work and that of the Monkaaba group. This is our first year purchasing his coffee through Semilla, but we hope to be able to buy his coffee again in the future.
