Silvia Ordoñez is one of the youngest producers we purchase from, at just 19 years old. She and her father, Silvio, who is a longtime producer, planted about 1500 pink bourbon trees on a .25 hectare plot of the family's 3 hectare farm years ago. Under the guidance of her father and the help of the Monkaaba group, she made her first international sale of coffee from this plot in 2023 to one of our own favorite roasters, Sey, in Brooklyn, NY. She has become an integral part of the Monkaaba group, attending weekly cuppings, and assists with roasting and cataloging coffee samples. This is our first time purchasing Silvia's coffee and we hope to continue being able to support her in the future.

In the cup, we find a great representation of the pink bourbon variety with jammy red fruits and a densely sweet base that reminds us of tootsie rolls. 

Monkaaba is an initiative aimed at assisting smallholder producers in finding better market access and better prices for their coffees, and helps invest in them to ensure their future success.  The leaders of the Monkaaba group are educating producers on how the supply chain works so that they can better navigate it, while helping them to improve growing, harvesting, and processing techniques. They also host open weekly cuppings to improve producers' ability to evaluate and understand their coffees while they receive feedback from other members. These open dialogues about pricing, quality, and the market are helping to create a more robust community of smallholder farmers in San Augustin, and is rooted in the importance of collaboration.
