America Perez Ramirez and her father Alejandro Ramírez Méndez farm across four parcels in Huehuetenango, at elevations ranging from 1,500 to 1,900 masl. They grow caturra, bourbon and catimor varieties under chalum and grevillea shade trees, and they grow corn and beans for household use on the land as well. They return coffee pulp back into the soil as a fertilizer and supplement with conventional fertilizers twice a year.

They are part of a multigenerational family of coffee farmers. Alejandro's father worked on farms for over 20 years before purchasing his first parcel of land to farm. Alejandro then grew up working alongside his father and purchased his first parcel of land about 15 years ago. He cleared it of overgrown brush and planted caturra and bourbon trees himself. Now America helps him manage the farms, with coffee as their sole source of income. During harvest, they employ 10-12 workers to assist with picking and production.

This is our first year purchasing coffee from this duo, and we think it fits perfectly into the transition to fall weather with its comforting and warming flavor profile.
