Mario Moreno is one of the seven brothers of the Moreno family who have been a driving force in the specialty coffee production in their area. The brothers inherited El Filo from their late father, Daniel Moreno, and have begun to create pathways for the younger generations to continue their family's legacy. Mario's other farm, Piedras Amarillas, sits at a slightly higher altitude and is planted with the descendants of the Pacas trees from El Filo. We hope to be able to feature both in the future as a means to compare the impact of slight differences in microclimate and tree maturity on the cup profile. We also look forward to purchasing coffees from other members of the Moreno family.

Though processing and drying coffee presents some challenges in cold and humid climates of Santa Barbara, the Morenos excel at producing exceptionally clean, sweet, and complex coffees through meticulous processing and drying. ThIs Pacas lot from Mario has a soft but complex acidity that reminds us of honeycrisp apple and mandarin with a deep brown sugar sweetness that reminds us of praline candy. This is the type of coffee we could drink on every brew method, every day.
